ConnectRichmond Online Forum Guidelines

Overview
ConnectRichmond’s Online Forum is another way for people in our community to connect, share ideas and seek advice on a wide range of topics. The Online Forum strives to make the community an enriching place by encouraging our members to conduct themselves with a high degree of integrity, decency, and respect. Your use of this Forum is subject to the following Guidelines. We reserve the right to modify them at any time by posting updates.

You must log in to your ConnectRichmond personal profile to post or reply to messages in the Online Forum. If you don’t have a personal profile, it’s free and easy to create one. Click here for more information.

Age Restriction
ConnectRichmond is concerned about the safety and privacy of all its users, particularly children. For this reason, if you are under the age of 18, ask your parent(s) or guardian(s) for permission before using the Online Forum and make sure they have read and understood these guidelines.

Response to Violations
ConnectRichmond does not edit the content of questions, answers, or comments in the Online Forum. However, we reserve the right to remove content that we determine, in our sole discretion, to be inappropriate and/or in violation of the Online Forum Guidelines. Depending on the level of offense, you may risk deactivation of your ConnectRichmond User ID and consequently everything associated with it, including but not limited to Forum postings, calendar entries, saved searches, etc. If you are unsure whether your content is appropriate or consistent with these policies, please use caution and do not post it to the Online Forum.

Content & Usage
The Online Forum allows our community to easily share facts, opinions and personal experiences to help others. It is up to each member of the Forum to maintain the integrity of the community's content. When posting content, please follow these rules:

YOU MAY NOT POST CONTENT (or links to content, including photos):

o that is violent, racist, abusive, threatening, slanderous, or belligerent against any individual or groups of individuals for any reason.

* that contains profane, obscene, vulgar or sexually explicit language.

* to post personal ads, or your own or others' personal information.
* to vent your frustrations, rant, make statements, or otherwise violate the question and answer format.
* that contains viruses or threats to computer software safety

MAINTAIN THE FORMAT: This is an online community comprised of links, questions and discussions, so please keep postings to these formats. As such, please try to keep your postings brief and to the point.

NO CHATTING OR PERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS: Questions that are “chatty” or attempt to engage others in personal communications may be removed.

ONE PROFILE PER MEMBER: Please do not create more than one profile. Members who use different profiles to ask and answer their own questions risk having their accounts deactivated.

NO COMMERCIAL ACTIVITY: You may not post URLs for the purpose of directing commercial activity to a non-ConnectRichmond site.

NO REPEATED POSTINGS: You may not post similar or identical postings. This also applies if you include the same commercial URL on all of your postings (except for signature lines) for the purpose of directing commercial activity to a non-ConnectRichmond site. Multiple identical postings, even if legitimate, may be considered spam.

ENGLISH AS THE PREFERED LANGUAGE: Please do not use other languages or symbols. Also, be sure to check your spelling and grammar.

NO HACKING: You may not promote or redirect traffic to a non-ConnectRichmond site, post links to sites that force the download of a virus, spyware, programs, or other content, or in any other way interfere with the operation of ConnectRichmond.

NO PASSWORD TRADING: You may not post content with the intent of trading passwords, product decryption programs, or any other programs.

NO FRAUD: You may not falsely claim credentials or expertise that you do not possess, or impersonate another user. Furthermore, you agree to not impersonate any person or communicate under a false name or a name you are not entitled or authorized to use.

Sharing Space and Resources

We are a team of professional consultants working with women and children in transition. We have over 20 years experience in the non-profit, financial, health-care and social service industries.
We are bi-lingual/bi-cultural and family oriented people who recognize that there are many facets of transition, and that it can be a positive or a negative experience, depending on what's in your “toolbox”.
We believe that given the right tools it can become an empowering and enlightening journey that will assist women and their families in achieving healthier and happier lives.

We are looking for a free or donated space. We receive many computers, literature and other items we cannot house. If you have a space you would like to share with us please call us or e-mail us. We often have to turn away donations of items because of lack of space. We would love to share our items with you. (Preferably in Richmond or Henrico County)

Finding new office space

Our nonprofit is fortunate enough to have just expanded our staff. With this growth we now are looking for a larger office. I would love to know some of the resources/websites out there that list available properties beyond Craigslist. We would love to find a freestanding house or something similar with at least 1200 sq. ft. Thanks!

volunteering on Christmas Day

Looking for Agencies Wanted to Participate in the Health Care Experiences Expo

At Virginia Commonwealth University we have a large population of undergraduate, pre-health students who are preparing to enter careers as veterinarians, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, and doctors.

The pre-health students must gain health care experience to explore the various fields in health care and they must present evidence of gaining exposure to health care when they apply for admission into very competitive graduate and undergraduate programs in the health sciences.

The Office of Pre-Health Advising (http://www.vcu.edu/uc/prehealth) is pleased to presents its 5th annual Health Care Experiences Expo. This is an opportunity for agencies and individuals who can offer our pre-health students exposure to health care to reach out and educate them about the opportunities to gain exposure to health care in the Richmond area.

The Health Care Experiences Expo has been a very popular event among our pre-health students and last year we had over 1100 students in attendance who were all eager to serve in the community and gain health care experiences to build their resumes.

The Expo will be on October 28th from 12:30-3:30 in the University Commons. Exhibitors are encouraged to arrive by 11am on October 28th so there is time to set up tables.

Exhibitors will be provided parking and we are working on trying to provide lunch as well.

Many problems face the poor, task force told

According to a recent Richmond Times-Dispatch article, "The problem is homelessness. The problem is education. The problem is too few programs for ex-offenders. The problem is there are no community-based lending institutions. There's not enough money, and not enough awareness of the social services that are available. There is no transportation for the working poor to get to better-paying jobs."

We are looking for mentors to make a difference in the lives of youth that are trying to change their own lives. You can be the key that changes a life!

You may ask yourself, why is mentoring so important? Don’t many of our youth have some type of positive role model in their lives? The answer is no – a lot of our youth lack a positive role model and need someone to provide them with stability, acceptance, guidance, and a sense of belonging and family.

Sometimes all it takes is the opportunity to become involved in a positive alternative activity, such as afterschool programs through community-based or faith-based organizations, or help with homework. But oftentimes, it’s the consistent presence of a caring adult that makes a real difference in their lives.

There is a wide range of personal, family, and community factors that contribute to juvenile delinquency and gang involvement. But a positive role model can provide them with stability, acceptance, guidance, and a sense of belonging and family. Many gang members state that one of the key factors that contributed to their joining a gang was the feeling of acceptance and family that the gang afforded them. As a mentor, you can help these young people learn to make better choices and successfully transition to adulthood.

What's the problem?

GEOCities reports that Pittsburg just developed "iBurgh," the first mobile app for citizens to report a problem (e.g, graffti with picture and automatic geotagging of location) to local government and submit it instantly for resolution and handling.

My question is whether the problem is that localities do not know what/where the problems are, but have fixers ready and waiting, which seems like the assumption behind this app.

Anybody with knowledge of the nature of the problem? Even if the assumption as I state it is false, would citizen reporting increase pressure and therefore response rate? Would this app work here?
